Filipino-American students
and international students of Philippine studies rarely
have the opportunity to study Philippine history, society,
and culture with the leading Philippine studies scholars
in the world. Many of these scholars are based at the
University of the Philippines, one of the few universities
that offer bachelor’s, masteral, and doctoral degrees
in Philippine Studies.
The University of the Philippines Philippine Studies
Program is a study abroad program designed for Filipino
American students and international students of Philippine
Studies, with summer
and fall programs. Students from the United
States shall stay at the 493-hectare UP Diliman campus
with its American colonial architecture, sprawling lawns,
gardens, lagoons, and acacia-lined streets.
The program's four components include: lectures on Philippine
studies, Filipino language classes, culture workshops,
and field trips to diverse destinations - historical
sites, museums, and lakeshore and farming communities.
The Philippine Education through Alternative Cultural Exposure (PEACE) Program provides a customized curriculum based on the participants' needs and objectives. This program is designed for individuals who would like to experience direct cultural immersion while also participating in the different components of the Philippine Studies Program. They also have the option to be hosted by Filipino families, cultural or community organizations during their stay.
The University
of the Philippines (UP) is the country's premier
university, with Diliman as its flagship campus. It
is the first university in the world to offer undergraduate
and graduate degrees in Philippine Studies.
The program partner in the United States is Philippine
Forum, a New York-based non-profit, multi-issue
organization that promotes the rights and welfare of
the Filipino-American community.
